Sources of Solar Energy
Solar energy comes from the solar radiation emitted by the sun. Solar energy is beneficial because it is a renewable resource.
-
Electricity
-
Photovoltaic cells convert solar radiation directly into electricity that can be used immediately to charge generators or released to the power grid.
Heat
-
Solar heaters harness the solar energy from the sun to heat water. Water is passed through solar panels to heat it which saves having to use fossil fuels for heat.
-
Mirrors
-
Mirrors can be used to reflect the solar energy to a central point where it is converted to heat that can be used for generating electricity.
Benefits
-
Solar power does not release greenhouse gases or contribute to acid rain like burning fossil fuels.
Limitations
-
Solar power can only be generated on sunny days so it cannot be counted on to produce energy at all times.
