Sycamore Tree Characteristics

The sycamore tree is one of the largest and most commonly found trees in eastern North American. Scientifically named Platanus occidentalis, the sycamore tree is often referred to as a "Buttonwood."

  1. Size

    • The sycamore tree grows to average heights of 60 to 100 feet, with a canopy diameter of 40 to 60 feet.

    Shape

    • The main trunk of the sycamore tree often divides into secondary trunks near the ground. As these secondary trunks spread up and outward, the sycamore's canopy appears dense and irregular.

    Foliage

    • The sycamore tree has broad leaves with jagged edges; each leaf grows to 4 to 6 inches in total length, with 3 to 4 lobes per leaf. The leaves fall off in autumn, and regrow in the spring.

    Bark

    • The sycamore tree is easily recognized by its white colored, exfoliating bark. The outermost layer of bark is brittle and easily flakes off into large, irregular pieces.

    Range

    • Common in the eastern deciduous forests of North America from Maine to Florida, the sycamore prefers full sunlight and moist, nutrient-rich soil.
