Requirements to Become a Tax Preparer
If you are looking for seasonal work and enjoy working with numbers, you may enjoy work as a tax preparer. Requirements can vary based on the degree to which you wish to pursue the profession and where you reside.

Education

Advanced education is typically not necessary to become a tax preparer, but a high school diploma or GED is required. Coursework in math or accounting is also helpful.
Courses

To work for a tax preparation company such as H&R block or Jackson Hewitt, you will have to complete the company's tax preparer's course (see Resources). The courses are available throughout the year and can even be completed online.

Availability

Tax preparers must be available to work in the busy tax season, which is January through April. Additional work may be available throughout the year for seasoned tax preparers.
State Licensing

Depending on the state in which you wish to work, you may need to become licensed. This may require the completion of continuing education courses.
Enrolled Agent

To become a recognized professional in the tax field, you can earn the designation of Enrolled Agent (see Resources). An EA is authorized to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service.
