What Are the Treatments for Ear Ache?

Earaches are common in children and adults. They can occur in the middle or outer ear. Common causes of earaches are minor injury, moisture in the ear canal or they can happen after an upper respiratory tract infection and a cold.

  1. Symptoms

    • Earaches can range from mild to severe. A symptom of mild earache can be itching rather than pain. Other symptoms can include full sensation in the ear ringing, pain and hearing loss.

    Treat the Pain

    • Pain relievers are important to aid in earache treatment. Use acetaminophen like Tylenol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain reliever such as Motrin or Aleve.

    Ear Drop Treatment

    • Use prescription ear drops like Auralgan, over-the-counter ear drops or warm olive oil to relieve pain. Apply the drops in the ear and remain on your side about five minutes. Place a cotton ball over the ear to catch any excess liquid.

    Heat Treatments

    • Use heat to treat an earache. Place a warm washcloth or a heating pad over the ear. Do this for approximately five minutes for no more than 30 minutes. You can also use a warm water bottle.

    Warning

    • Do not let your child go to bed with the heating pad on the ear. Don't use a heating pad if your child isn't old enough to tell you if it is too hot. Don't give your child aspirin. Do not use ear drops if the eardrum has ruptured.
