What Clothing Is Needed on Christmas Island?

Christmas Island, Kiritimati, is an atoll in the Indian Ocean. The climate is tropical with two distinct seasons: wet and dry. Temperatures vary little year-round and drop very little at night.

Sun

The proximity of Kiritimati to the equator means that the sun's rays are strong and bright. Lightweight, light-colored clothing that covers your skin paired with a wide-brim hat and sunglasses are the best ways to avoid sunburn.

Rain

During the wet season, which extends from May to November, rains are heavy and monsoon winds blow. Rain gear is your key to comfort during this season.

Ocean

Atolls are islands made of coral that surround a lagoon. Scuba, snorkel and swimming gear are helpful for water activities. Reef shoes protect your feet from getting cut on the coral.

Jungle

Over 60 percent of Kiritimati is a protected national park managed by Australia. Hiking independently or with a tour group is a good way to see the flora and fauna, but sturdy hiking boots and ample socks are a must.

Sleeping

The temperatures at night are approximately 70 degrees F year-round. If you require sleeping apparel, make it lightweight.
