Ribose Side Effects

Ribose is a sugar produced by the body, now manufactured for use as a medicine. It is available in bulk powder, capsule, tablet and chewable tablet form, under names like Beta-D-ribofuranose or D-ribose. It treats a genetic metabolic disorder called myoadenylate deaminase deficiency (MAD or AMPD deficiency), decreased blood flow through the arteries in the heart (coronary artery disease) and as a supplement for athletes who wish to increase stamina and endurance.

  1. Digestive Effects

    • Diarrhea, stomach discomfort and nausea may accompany the use of Ribose. The most common of these Ribose side effects is diarrhea.

    Neurological

    • The use of Ribose may cause occasional headaches and lightheadedness.

    Heart Effects

    • Due to increased energy supply to the heart, anyone with any type of heart condition should avoid taking Ribose until they consult their doctor.

    Blood Sugar

    • Ribose might decrease your blood sugar levels. You should not take Ribose if you have diabetes or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Taking Ribose along with insulin or other medications used to lower blood sugar might cause your blood sugar to be too low. Ribose must be taken with food as reactive hypoglycemia may result if taken on empty stomach.

    Mothers and Children

    • Ribose is not recommended for use by pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children.
