Why Didn't My Azaleas Bloom?
Azaleas are flowering shrubs that add color and beauty to any area. If your azalea is not blooming several possible causes could be at fault. By making a few changes you could soon have blooms. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Lack of Sun
-
Azaleas generally require a mix of sun and shade. If they do not receive needed sunlight it can cause them not to bloom.
Pruning
-
In most regions, azaleas should not be pruned after August. Late pruning may eliminate flower buds that are setting for the next year's blooms.
-
Weather
-
An early cold snap after warm weather can stunt azaleas' blooming for the next year. If a cold snap is predicted, cover the plant with plastic or blankets.
Lack of Moisture
-
Insufficient water can also stop a plant from blooming. Azaleas require frequent watering and benefit from misting the leaves with water when blooms are not present.
Fertilizing
-
Azaleas generally do well with very little fertilization, and if over fertilized, they may not produce blooms.
