What Is a Confetti Cake?

Confetti cakes come in many colors, flavors and styles. The constant for a confetti cake, however, is always the flecks of color on the inside and often the outside of the cake. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Origins

    • The origins of confetti cake are not known. However, the cake appears to have first grown popular at festive functions, particularly birthdays and New Year celebrations

    Color

    • Confetti cakes earn their name because of the confetti-like dots found in the cake and on the frosting. Typically these dots are made from rainbow sprinkles, which are added just before baking. The heat dissolves the sprinkles, leaving only splashes of confetti-like color.

    Flavor

    • A confetti cake can be any flavor, although most recipes use vanilla or angel food. Lemon, strawberry and almond also are used. Chocolate confetti cakes are uncommon because the dark coloring makes the sprinkles difficult to see.

    Preparation

    • Prepares a confetti cake by following any cake recipe or even using a box mix. Before baking, add the sprinkles and stir them into the batter.

    Tip

    • Although confetti cakes are easy to make, you must take care when stirring in the sprinkles to avoid poor distribution. Stirring too much can lead send the sprinkles to the bottom.
