Library technicians assist librarians with duties such as organizing library materials and helping visitors find information, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says. A library technician's job usually includes some office and computer work as well as hands-on duties such as carrying or shelving books.

  1. Requirements

    • The education requirements vary. Some libraries only require a high school diploma, while others require a college education related to library sciences.

    Salary

    • According to the BLS, in May 2006, the median annual salary of library technicians was $26,560. Library technicians employed at colleges and universities earned the most compared with their peers.

    Considerations

    • The use of computers in libraries is increasing. Those who have experience working with databases, automated systems and online libraries will have increased job opportunities.

    Future

    • There were approximately 120,000 library technician jobs in 2006. The BLS estimates library technician jobs will grow at an average rate from 2006 to 2016, with more jobs being available in libraries that require specialized training.

    Advancement

    • Library technicians usually take on more responsibilities as their experience grows. Earning a degree in library sciences allows a library technician to work toward becoming a librarian.
