Swollen Throat Symptoms

A healthy throat is vital to physical well-being. It not only controls airflow and substance consumption, but is also intricately connected to nasal passageways and mucous membranes. A swollen throat can cause significant problems that may interfere with, or even prevent, essential bodily functions. Most of the symptoms of a sore throat are fairly obvious and difficult to overlook or ignore.

Checking the throat.

Redness

The inside of the throat may turn red around the trachea and esophagus due to inflammation. This is typically accompanied by pain or discomfort.

Pain

Due to the amount of tissue and sensitivity in the throat, it is susceptible to pain. When it swells due to infection or irritation, it may become more sensitive or even painful, making swallowing more difficult.

Dryness

A swollen throat can become dry and scratchy, causing coughing and a hoarse voice.

Difficulty Swallowing or Breathing

Swallowing may be hindered because of throat swelling. Usually there is only partial blockage, but if air flow is hindered, a visit to the emergency room may be necessary.

Serious Symptoms

If a swollen throat is accompanied by vomiting, bleeding, skin rash, or pus in the throat, a serious illness may be the cause, requiring immediate medical attention.
