Helicobacter-Pylori Condition & Symptoms

Helicobacter-pylori condition is a digestive disorder that affects almost two-thirds of the world's population. Many infected people do not show symptoms, but others may experience painful stomach problems.

  1. Cause

    • Helicobacter-pylori condition is caused by the Helicobacter-pylori bacterium. The bacterium is transmitted through contact with infected saliva or infected feces.

    Ulcers

    • A main symptom of Helicobacter-pylori infection is sores in the stomach called ulcers. These sores occur when the bacterium penetrate the lining of the stomach or small intestine.

    Ulcer Symptoms

    • Ulcers cause a burning pain between the navel and the chest. Other symptoms include vomiting and loss of appetite. Some ulcers may bleed and cause anemia, weakness, bloody stool and bloody vomit.

    Other Symptoms

    • Inflammation of the lining of the stomach, called gastritis, is another symptom of Helicobacter pylori. Gastritis may cause pain, nausea, bloating and vomiting.

    Treatment

    • Treatment usually consists of antibiotic medications to eliminate the bacteria from the body. Acid-reducing medications may also be used to decrease stomach acid and ease symptoms.
