Malva Verticillata Side Effects

Also called Chinese mallow, Malva verticillata is an herb used in Chinese and alternative medicine. Despite its use in the treatment of kidney disorders, sore throat, insufficient breast milk supply and constipation, Malva verticillata poses a risk for side effects in some patients.

  1. Safety

    • According to the RxList website, there is not enough research available to assure that use of Malva verticillata is safe.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Some patients develop allergic reactions while taking Malva verticillata, causing shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing and swelling of the face and extremities, reports the Physician's Desktop Reference. Because such reactions may be life-threatening, seek emergency medical attention if you experience any allergy symptoms while taking Malva verticillata.

    Blood Sugar

    • Malva verticillata has the potential to lower blood sugar levels, causing hypoglycemia, particularly in diabetic patients who use insulin or oral medications to control glucose. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include confusion, shaking, sweating, anxiety and double or blurred vision.

    Pregnancy

    • Because its effects upon fetal development are unknown, avoid taking Malva verticillata while pregnant.

    Considerations

    • Before beginning any regimen of Malva verticillata, consult your doctor. Follow the directions on the label of your Malva verticillata to ensure that you take a safe dose.
