What Is a 006 File Extension?
A file extension consisting solely of text can show the function of a file. For example, .TXT refers to text files while .AVI designates video media. An extension of numbers, however (such as .006), offers no clues to a file's contents.
-
Sequence
-
An .006 extension shows that the file is part of a sequence of lower (and perhaps higher) numbered extension. For example, myfile.006 would have related files starting at myfile.001 and maybe continuing from myfile.007 and beyond.
Pieces
-
The file is a piece of a larger compressed or uncompressed original, whose original extension remain unknown until the pieces are rejoined.
-
Programs
-
Programs that create these sequences include HJSplit, which splits and joins large files, and WinRAR, which compresses and splits them.
Advantage
-
A smaller piece takes up less space and is thus easier to store on hard disk and faster to transmit via email or by a website download.
Joining
-
To create the original file, put all the pieces into one folder so HJSplit or WinRAR can find them easily. If any of the parts are missing, you won't be able to join the files.
