About Tea Tree Soap

Tea tree soap is made with tea tree oil, which comes from the tea tree, found in Australia. The medicinal, antiseptic and therapeutic qualities of tea tree oil have been known for centuries. Those qualities make it very useful in a soap. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Tea Tree

    • The tea tree, not to be confused with the tea bush, is found in coastal eastern Australia. Tea tree oil in made by crushing the leaves and forming an extract, which can be used in its original form or added to soaps, lotions and shampoos.

    Qualities of Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil is a potent antiseptic. It has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of skin conditions and disorders, which is why soaps and shampoos made using it are becoming increasingly popular.

    Tea Tree Soap

    • Tea tree soap is becoming widely available and therefore less expensive. It's an effective treatment for dry skin, seborrhea and topical itching. As a shampoo, it can help alleviate scalp problems, including dandruff and sebaceous cysts.

    Comparison with Topical Antibiotics

    • Tea tree oil applications have been shown to be as effective as low-strength topical antibiotics, albeit with slower reaction times. Tea tree oil is, however, mildly toxic in large doses (as are many topical antibiotics; in either case, it's a good idea to consult a physician before using any such products).

Where to Find Tea Tree Soap

    • Any natural foods grocery should have a good selection of tea tree oil-based cosmetic products. Tea tree shampoos and soaps can also be found on the shelves of major retailers.
