Bronchial Asthma in Dogs

Asthma is an uncomfortable and frightening, but not uncommon, ailment in both cats and dogs. Bronchial asthma is a result of obstructed airways when the bronchi (air passages inside the lungs) fill up with mucous and begin to spasm.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing and lethargy, but in severe cases the dog may also exhibit signs of respiratory distress accompanied by purple gums or tongue.

    Causes

    • Canine bronchial asthma may be caused by allergens, second hand smoke, air pollution and even some fragrances.

    Diagnosis

    • Chest X-rays occasionally accompanied by heartworm tests, blood counts and bronchial lavage are used by veterinarians to diagnose bronchial asthma.

    Treatment

    • Canine bronchial asthma is often treated using steroids, antihistamines, bronchodilators and occasionally antibiotics or oxygen therapy.

    Prognosis

    • Dogs suffering from bronchial asthma are usually able to live normal lives after diagnosis with proper and continued treatment of the condition.
