Emotional Side Effects of Steroids

Corticosteroids or, simply steroids, are prescription medications used to reduce inflammation caused by arthritis, asthma, allergic reactions and a number of other conditions. Despite their effectiveness, corticosteroids pose a risk for side effects in some patients, including emotional changes.

  1. Significance

    • There is an increased risk of emotional side effects from corticosteroids when the you take high dosages of the drug, such as those exceeding 30mg per day, according to the Hospital for Specialty Surgery.

    Types of Emotional Side Effects

    • Emotional side effects of corticosteroids include anxiousness, irritability, euphoria and depression, reports the Hospital for Specialty Surgery. It is also possible to experience mood swings or highs and lows many times during a given day or week.

    Time Frame

    • The emotional side effects of steroids typically subside within a few months after you stop taking steroids, according to John Hopkins University.

    Warning

    • Despite any emotional side effects you develop, it is important not to suddenly stop taking steroids as this has the potential to cause symptoms of withdrawal, such as fatigue, joint pain, stiffness and fevers. If it becomes necessary for you to discontinue use, your doctor will devise a plan to gradually fade your dosage to minimize withdrawal symptoms.

    Solution

    • In some cases, your doctor may be able to alter your dosage of steroids to minimize the emotional side effects of steroids. When this is not possible, antidepressants or other mood stabilizing medications may provide relief.
