Types of Mexican Pottery

Mexican pottery is known for distinctive design patterns and creativity that the artists use to develop unique creations. The pottery methods used in Mexico predate the Aztec empire and are still popular in today's Mexican culture.

    • The different types of Mexican pottery are functional and pleasing to the eye. Serviceable plates and bowls complement a meal and the pieces are used often as part of an art display.

    • The Olmer culture, which existed between 1200 to 400 B.C., created the first known Mexican pottery.

    • The three types of Mexican pottery are earthenware, stoneware and porcelain.

    Considerations

    • Earthenware is made by being fired (baked) at a low temperature. Stonewere is produced from heavy clay. Porcelain is composed of white clay.
