Cream of tartar is a crystalline acid that forms inside of wine barrels, then ground to form the powdery substance used in cooking.

    Uses

  1. Cream of tartar is often used in making eggs, candies and frostings. It gives volume to egg whites by inhibiting crystal formation. It is also used in candies and frostings to produce a creamy texture.
  2. Where to Buy

  3. Cream of tartar is a standard in cooking and baking and can be found at any grocery store in the spice aisle.
  4. Non-Food Uses

  5. Cream of tartar can be used to clean aluminum cookware by boiling with water for 15 minutes then scrubbing clean after it dries. You can also mix it with vinegar to create a paste to remove caked on foods.
  6. Substitutions

  7. You can substitute white vinegar or lemon juice in place of cream of tartar when you are working with eggs. You only need to add three times the amount of vinegar or lemon juice that you would need. This substitution does not work with baked goods.
  8. Considerations

  9. Cream of tartar has been around since the ancient times and is the main ingredient in baking powder. Cream of tartar has an indefinite shelf life, but keep its container tightly closed at all times.
