Interesting Facts on the Skeletal System

In humans, the skeletal system consists of bones and cartilage (mostly the former). Beneath the skin it connects, supports and anchors the muscular system, including tendons and ligaments, as well as the internal organs and other soft tissues.

  1. Function

    • The bones of the skeletal system provide structure for your body. They also protect your vital organs from damage.

    Types

    • There are four types of bones in the human body: long, flat circular, long circular and flat irregular.

    Features

    • Bones are hard on the outside, soft on the inside (including the marrow) and are composed of about three-fourths water.

    Quantity

    • Babies are born with 300 bones. Some of these fuse together over time, so there are only 206 by the time a person reaches adulthood. There are 14 bones in the human face and 54 in the hands.

    Fun Fact

    • The femur (also called the thigh bone) is the largest bone in the human body, and makes up one quarter of the body's height.
