What Are the Requirements for Anthropology?

Anthropology is a broad and varied field. However, requirements for a basic degree are similar at most institutions. Variation in programs and requirements are evident at the master's and doctoral levels.

Education

To work in anthropology, you must have a degree from an accredited college or university. A bachelor of arts in anthropology generally takes four years to complete, but the time may be longer or shorter as individual circumstances allow.

Core Classes

Colleges and universities have a basic set of "core" classes all students are required to take. These include math, science and humanities. If anthropology is your main interest, it may be a good idea to take the introductory anthropology class to satisfy the humanities requirement.

Major Classes

Different schools offer classes that are comparable to one another in content, but the course names are not always identical. Classes in linguistics, physical anthropology, field methods and various cultures are a sample of what is to be expected to satisfy the requirements of the major.

Fieldwork

Fieldwork is not necessarily part of an undergraduate program, but it will be required should you pursue a master's or doctoral degree. Undergraduates can volunteer to accompany a professor to do fieldwork during school holidays or summer break in some cases.

Further Education

To truly move forward in the field, a master's degree or doctorate is recommended. This will not only increase your compensation, but will also give you a wider scope of employment opportunities.
