What Are All the Different Kinds of Cherry Trees?
While there are numerous types of fruit-producing cherry trees, each tree bears one of two types of cherries--either sweet cherries or sour cherries. Any one of the following types of trees would be a great addition to your orchard. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Bing
-
The Bing cherry tree produces the finest sweet cherries. These cherries are perfect for cooking because their flesh is sweet, juicy and firm. The colors of the Bing cherries range from garnet to nearly black.
-
Black Tartarian
-
The Black Tartarian cherry has a dark purplish color. The flesh is sweet, juicy and very flavorful. The fruits of these trees normally ripen in late June.
Early Richmond
-
The Early Richmond cherries are the first sour cherries to be available in late spring. They are small and bright red with a tart flavor. This type of cherry is great for cooking as well because they do not get mushy while being cooked.
Montmorency
-
The Montmorency cherry is the fruit that is mostly used in the classic cherry pies. It is one of the most popular sour cherries in the United States. It produces large, darkish red cherries with a yellow flesh.
Sweetheart Cherry
-
The Sweetheart cherry tree is one of the last cherry trees to ripen during the season. The cherries from these trees remain firm when they are picked and eaten. It is becoming one of the most popular cherry trees to plant.
