Sony utilized a MiniDisc for its player that pre-dated CDs. The MiniDisc utilizes the .ATP file extension along with .OMA and .OMG extensions. These files are similar to MP3 in format and can be used to read or write from a MiniDisc. The format was also used in Sony electronics' devices.
The disc is formatted in .ATP's format, ATRAC. ATRAC (Adaptive TRansform Acoustic Coding) was created for MiniDisc so the same amount of audio can be carried on the smaller MiniDisc as the larger CD.
ATRAC and the .ATP file extension was placed in Sony's MiniDisc in 1992. The compression format was also used in Sony's theater sound and competed with Dolby surround-sound home-audio systems.
ATRAC compressions using .ATP music data are 1/5 of the rate of a CD. This compression had enabled recording media to be smaller such as portable media players.
The .ATP file comes by the way of ATRAC, ATRAC2 and ATRAC3. These .ATP formats have increased compression from 1/5 (ATRAC), 1/10 (ATRAC2) to 1/20 (ATRAC3) of its original sizes. The formats have been developed since 1992.
