The .REG file extension is used by the Windows registry, and by files that can be imported into the registry. The Windows registry contains vital information used by the operating system.

  2. Function

  3. The registry stores data that Windows needs to utilize as you use your computer. This includes your personal settings for each program, along with your basic computer settings.
  4. Importing

  5. A file with the .REG extension can be imported into the Windows registry by double-clicking it. The importing process is completed instantly.
  6. Backing Up

  7. The Windows registry can be backed up by clicking "File", and "Export" from the Windows Registry Editor. This allows the registry to be restored if a change should cause damage to the main file.
  8. Cleaning

  9. The registry tends to grow larger as programs are installed and removed from a computer. Some popular programs used to clean the registry include CCleaner, Norton SystemWorks, and Registry Mechanic.
  10. Warning

  11. An .REG file can potentially damage a computer if it is created with malicious intent. Avoid double clicking a file with the .REG extension unless you are sure of what changes the file will make.
