Side Effects of Thyroid Soloxine for Pets

Soloxene (levothyroxine) is prescribed by veterinarians to treat hypothyroidism, primarily in dogs.

  1. Function

    • Hypothyroidism is a disorder wherein a dog's thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone. Soloxene acts as a hormone replacement therapy.

    Precautions

    • Although hypothyroidism is largely a disorder of older dogs, Soloxene should not be given to debilitated animals or those with high blood pressure or heart disease.

    Side Effects

    • When the correct dosage is given, there are no side effects. If the dog starts to eat more than usual, has a fast heart rate, excessive panting and the inability to tolerate heat, the veterinarian should be contacted.

    Risks

    • Long-term use of Soloxene may cause bone loss.

    Considerations

    • To manage hypthyroidism in the dog, it will need to have regular blood tests and remain on Soloxene for the rest of its life.
