Viral vs. Bacterial Meningitis

While viral meningitis is not usually considered serious, it does have the same symptoms as bacterial meningitis, which can be life-threatening, so it's important to get a diagnosis right away.

Treatment

No medications cure viral meningitis, but acetaminophen or ibuprofen can relieve some of the discomfort. Bed rest and drinking plenty of fluids are also important.

Considerations

Viral meningitis is contagious, so do not return to normal activities until your doctor gives the OK.

Risk

While anyone can get viral meningitis, it is most common among young children. Cleaning your hands often and properly, and teaching your children to do so, lowers the risk.
