Arimidex or as it is known generically, Anastrozole, is a prescription medication used to inhibit the growth of breast tumors in postmenopausal women by lowering estrogen levels. It is typically prescribed to newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients.

Weight gain is a common side effect of Arimidex. eMEDTV says, "Weight gain with Arimidex occurs in up to 9 percent of people taking the drug." If you experience any weight gain while using Arimidex you should contact your doctor and he may suggest a special diet or a change in dosage.

Arimidex.com lists the the most common side effects as: mood swings, hot flashes, vomiting, nausea, joint problems, sore throat, high blood pressure, depression, rash, swelling of the arms and legs, headache, insomnia, weakness and hot flashes.

According to Medline Plus, Arimidex can decrease the density in the bones, worsening the effects of osteoporosis. This can lead to possible breaks or fractures.
Serious Side Effects

Drugs.com lists serious side effects as: sudden numbness of the limbs or half the body, confusion, problems with speech, vision or balance, swollen glands or severe allergic reactions. A doctor should be contacted immediately if you experience any of these side effects.
