What Is the File Extension 005?
Many file extensions show files that can be used by themselves given the correct player or viewer. For example, you can open and view an AVI file with Windows Media Player. However, some extensions, such as 005, cannot work alone.

The 005 extension shows that the file is a piece of a larger file, which may be compressed or uncompressed. (See Reference 1.)

At least four extensions lower than 005 exist, numbered "001," "002," "003" and "004," each with the same name, such as "MYFILE.001" and "MYFILE.002." Depending on the size of the original, higher-numbered extensions, such as "006" and "007" may exist. (See Reference 1.)

The pieces of the larger file are easier to store and to send via email, which often limits file attachments to a particular size.

Applications that can create these extensions include HJSplit, which both splits and joins files, and WinRAR, which can compress the file before splitting. (See References 1 and 2.)

To re-create the original, you need to put all the pieces in one folder so that a program like HJSplit can find and rejoin them easily.
