Most states do not require locksmiths to obtain a license, but if you would like to boost your reputation, you can receive varying levels of certification through Associated Locksmiths of America.

You will need to obtain a locksmith license if you live in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and certain cities.
Types

There are two main types of locksmith licenses: locksmith business licenses and locksmith employee licenses. If you intend to install alarm systems as well, you may need an additional alarm system installer license.
