Tubular Sclerosis Symptoms

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare, multisystem genetic disease affecting as many as 40,000 Americans. The disease is caused by genetic mutations which cause tumors to grow on vital organs of the body. Symptoms can be evident at birth, but can be mild enough that the condition goes undiagnosed. There is no cure for tuberous sclerosis.

  1. Skin Abnormalities

    • Tuberous sclerosis causes skin abnormalities such as facial lesions, patches of light-colored skin, skin that is thickened and growths near the nails.

    Neurological

    • Neurological symptoms of tuberous sclerosis can include delays in development, hyperactivity, aggression, seizures, learning disabilities and retardation.

    Kidneys

    • Tuberous sclerosis can cause tumors to develop in the kidneys and can become cancerous and potentially life threatening.

    Lungs

    • Tumors in the lungs are a symptom of tuberous sclerosis and can cause shortness of breath, coughing and lung failure.

    Complications

    • Complications of tumors caused by tuberous sclerosis include headaches, nausea, vision problems and problems with the heart's rhythm.

    Treatment

    • Treatment of tuberous sclerosis includes anti-epileptic drugs for seizures, medicine for behavioral problems, educational therapy to deal with developmental delays, and surgery to remove tumors.
