- According to the USDA, food must be kept at or above 140 degrees F to remain safe. You can easily monitor the temperature inside your food warmer using an infrared thermometer, or by placing an oven thermometer inside the food warmer and making sure to check it frequently.
- Food that has fallen to room temperature will remain safe to eat for two hours, and should be thrown out afterward. If your food falls below the USDA's 140 degree F rule, throw it out after two hours.
- Food kept in the warmer should be eaten or stored within a four hour window. After four hours, any remaining food should be removed from the warmer and prepared for proper cold storage.
- Make sure all food warmers are plugged into a grounded outlet and have ample storage for food.
- Types of food warmers include hot boxes, steam tables and cabinet food warmers. Each type will have detailed instructions and a maximum capacity; familiarize yourself with the model before you use it.
