Human Brain Fun Facts

Surrounding the human brain is a liquid that helps cushion it as we move our heads. There are three very tough membranes called meninges that cover the brain's surface, which help protect it from being damaged.

  1. Speed and Power

    • Human brains process information at rates from 1 mile per hour to over 268 miles per hour. The brain generates enough electricity to power a light bulb.

    Weight

    • The human brain weights only about 3 pounds, but contains 100 billion neurons, which are brain cells. Larger people do have slightly larger brains that smaller people.

    Oxygen and Sugar

    • Human brains require a continuous supply of oxygen in order to survive and sugar in the form of glucose in order for the neurons to function.

    Pain

    • The human brain does not have pain receptors. Brain surgery is performed while people are awake, which does not hurt due to the lack of pain receptors.

    Misconception

    • It is a myth that human beings only use 10 percent of their brains. The entire brain is active when you tap your finger, read an article, stand on one foot or do any other type of activity.
