Sphinx Cat Information

The Sphinx is an easily recognizable cat due to its sleek body, large eyes and perky ears. The cats are recognized as full breed, very affectionate and make excellent pets.

  1. Origin

    • The Sphinx is a fairly new entry to the long list of cat breeds known today. The little almost-hairless cat was born to a domestic cat in Toronto, Canada, in 1966.

    Hair

    • Most people think Sphinxes are hairless, but they have just a slight peach fuzz down (often compared to feeling a peach or suede). There may also be slight growth of hair on the toes, tail and nose. Sphinxes do get cold just like any other animal or person.

    Personality

    • Sphinxes enjoy attention and being around people. They are high energy and will clown around to capture the crowd. They acclimate to both people and other animals but tend to prefer people.

    Health Requirements

    • Sphinxes' lack of hair means that the oils produced by the body require assistance with absorption. Gentle cleaning with warm cloths should help. Sphinxes, unlike other cat breeds, do not mind interaction with water.

    Breeding and Competition

    • Sphinx breeders often find waiting lists for their cats. Bred kittens are available to adopt after 12 weeks. The breed was accepted in 2002 by the Cat Fancier's Association as able to compete for Champion Class.

    Fun Fact

    • A Sphinx cat caught a glimpse of fame when featured as Mr. Bigglesworth in the "Austin Powers" movies.
