Bent Arm Barbell Pullover & Shoulder Injuries

How the Injury Occurs
-
Shoulder injury occurs with this exercise when the shoulder joints are overstretched. The joint and muscle tissues can tear, causing pain and soreness.
-
Causes of the Injury
-
Shoulder injury can occur during a bent arm barbell pullover if an excessive amount of weight is used. Also, an injury can occur if the person performing the exercise does not keep perfect form and shifts incorrectly or straightens the arm.
Preventing the Injury
-
To prevent this type of injury, make sure the weight used is appropriate for what you are able to safely lift. Also, perform the exercise properly.
Proper Technique
-
Lay on your upper back perpendicular to the exercise bench with the barbell on the other side of the bench. Grab the barbell and position it directly above the chest with your elbows kept at a 90-degree angle. Lower the bar behind your head, elbows remaining bent, until your upper arms are next to your ears. Repeat this motion.
Treatment of the Injury
-
If shoulder injury does occur as a result of this exercise, refrain from any further exercise. Apply a cold compress, followed by a heating pad or medicated cream to the injury. Have the area gently massaged and continue to move as necessary to maintain blood flow.
