Why Athletes Make Good Role Models

In today's society, many people look to professional athletes to provide more than just entertainment. Young children especially view many athletes as role models and want to emulate the way these stars dress, act and live their lives. While some athletes aren't deserving of their "role model" status, others act like role models and responsible community citizens.

  1. Physical Fitness

    • Athletes are required to stay in peak physical condition to perform optimally. Seeing athletes that you admire exercising hard to stay in shape is an excellent example, especially as Americans struggle with nutrition and exercise.

    Determination

    • Athletes show people that determination and perseverance can help you achieve your dreams. By watching athletes keep playing even after a tough loss can help people, especially kids, understand that even if you fail the first time you should keep trying your best.

    Sacrifice

    • Athletes have sacrificed many things to get to the top of their game. Many had to forgo other fun events in order to practice their sport--and this sense of sacrifice and discipline is an admirable quality in a role model.

    Teamwork

    • Almost all athletes have a team around them. Teamwork is an essential part of not only athletics, but life, as well. Athletes who are good team players model how important teamwork is in daily life.

    Charitable Giving

    • Everyone knows that many professional athletes are paid very, very well. However, many of these athletes also routinely give of their money and time to charitable causes. Volunteering for an important cause is a role-model quality that many athletes posses and that people should strive to emulate.
