The generic drug metformin is used to regulate blood sugar and assist with certain types of infertility, such as that caused by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Taking metformin during pregnancy is considered safe and beneficial.

    Metformin and Infertility

  1. Metformin is used to treat infertility in women who have PCOS, and is shown to increase the chances of conception in women who suffer from this condition. It can also decrease the risk of first trimester complications.
  2. Metformin and Diabetes

  3. During pregnancy, diabetics may find that their condition worsens. In these cases, metformin alone may not be enough to control blood sugar levels.
  4. Birth Defects

  5. Studies have found that metformin does not increase the rate of birth defects and does not affect birth size and weight.
  6. Possible Complications

  7. There is some suggestion that metformin can increase the chance of late pregnancy complications, such as pre-eclampsia. It is also suggested that some babies develop jaundice after exposure to metformin.
  8. Breastfeeding

  9. Metformin is transmitted in breast milk; however, the baby's digestive system breaks down the medication. There are no documented ill effects from breastfeeding while on metformin.
