Side Effects of Biofreeze

Biofreeze pain-relieving gel uses menthol to provide a temporary relief from minor aches and pains. While many Biofreeze users experience no adverse symptoms, sustained use over several days has occasionally caused severe symptoms.

  1. Sickness

    • When used for longer than two days, users may begin to experience a sore throat, high fever, nausea, cough, and difficulty breathing.

    Skin

    • Some users, especially those with sensitive skin or skin allergies, experience localized redness and irritation of the skin. If a rash occurs and does not disappear after a 20-minute soak in a water bath mixed with one cup of baking soda, consult a doctor.

    Allergy

    • Some users may have an allergic reaction to menthol or camphor, two ingredients found in Biofreeze.

    Temperature

    • Biofreeze uses a cooling effect. Never use a heating pad on an area treated with Biofreeze, as you may not be able to accurately judge how hot the temperature is on the problem area.

    Poisoning

    • Biofreeze should never be eaten. Menthol, the active ingredient, can cause poisoning when ingested in large quantities.
