Does Nyquil Make You Tired?

NyQuil products contain a powerful combination of ingredients that includes combinations of pain and fever reducers, cough suppressants, antihistamines and alcohol. NyQuil products must be used with caution due to the effects that some of these ingredients may cause.

NyQuil is a type of over-the-counter medication, produced by Vicks, that is used to treat symptoms of colds and influenza viruses, and to combat sleeplessness associated with these conditions.

Antihistamine Ingredients

NyQuil products contain one of two antihistamines, doxylamine succinate or chlorpheniramine maleate, as an added decongestant and to induce drowsiness or sedation.

Alcohol Ingredient

Alcohol is listed as one of NyQuil’s inactive ingredients, but it may contribute to drowsiness. Due to the alcohol content in NyQuil, this product should not be used with alcohol or by people who have alcohol addictions.

NyQuil Less Drowsy Cold & Flu Relief Liquid

The NyQuil Less Drowsy formula will still cause sedation and drowsiness, but to a lesser extent than other NyQuil products. NyQuil Less Drowsy contains the antihistamine chlorpheniramine maleate and smaller amounts of alcohol.

NyQuil must not be used by persons operating machinery or a motor vehicle. Consumers must follow the dosage instructions to avoid possible overdose complications.
