Wilderness Safety Rules

Wilderness safety rules help to ensure an enriching experience for all who love the great outdoors. Observing the right rules will keep you and your loved ones safe.

  1. Use a Buddy System

    • Wherever possible, use a buddy system prior to going into the wilderness. Being with a buddy can help you to avoid becoming lost.

    Basic Supplies

    • Always wear an emergency whistle and keep a plastic trash bag with you in the wilderness. You can blow the whistle for help and wear the bag for warmth if you are injured or lost.

    Awareness

    • Remain aware of your surroundings in the wilderness, watching to ensure that you do not step on snakes or poisonous plants, and be mindful of any people or animals not on the path.

    Weather

    • Always check the weather forecast for the area you are visiting and dress accordingly. Lots of layers are a good bet because you can add or remove them as needed.

    Dealing With Animals

    • Remain calm when dealing with animals. Blow your whistle or yell to scare them so that they will run away. Never throw anything or hit them.

    Carry a Map

    • Carry a map of the wilderness area you are exploring so that you can adequately plan your activities, resting times and resting places. This will help you to ensure that you do not become overly tired or injured.
