Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Bacteria from sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia are the main causes of PID, or pelvic inflammatory disease. The bacteria travel through the vagina and to the female reproductive system. Douching and IUDs can push bacteria into the vagina and cervix and or trap them there. PID symptoms can occur within a few days, or they may take months to appear.

No Symptoms
-
Some women experience no symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease and do not realize that they have it.
Pelvic Pressure
-
In some cases, women will feel pressure in the pelvic area due to inflammation of the female organs.
-
Back Pain
-
Pain in the lower back occurs, and it can spread down one or both legs. Sometimes this pain is mistaken for menstrual cramps.
Discharge and Odor
-
If PID is left untreated, women may experience abnormal vaginal discharge that is yellow, brown or a greenish color and may be accompanied by a foul odor.
Fever
-
A fever of 101 or higher can indicate PID, especially if there are no other known causes. You can have pelvic inflammatory disease without a fever, however.
Urinary Problems
-
Pain, burning and difficulty during urination can indicate PID. Women may mistake this symptom for a urinary tract infection.
