What Is a K1 Visa?

The United States Department of State defines a K1 visa as a "Nonimmigrant Visa for a Fiance(e)." A K1 visa is allows the fiancee of a United States citizen to enter the United States.

  1. Fiance(e)

    • A fiance is a person who is engaged to be married legally to a U.S. citizen. Legal marriages are defined by the laws of the state in which the marriage will take place.

    Marriage

    • After the fiance has entered the United States, he must marry the U.S. citizen within 90 days.

    Fiance Contact

    • While some cultural exceptions are made, the U.S. citizen must have met with her fiance in person within the past two years.

    Traveling Outside the United States

    • Once the fiance gains a visa to the United States, he cannot re-enter the country on the initial K1 visa.

    Petition for Alien Fiance

    • To obtain a K1 visa, Form I-129F must be submitted to the local DHS's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
