Do You Need a Boaters License to Operate a Boat in Florida?

Who Needs a Boaters License?

Anyone 21 years old or younger must have a boater's license. The license is not required for boating on private lakes or ponds.

Exceptions to the Law

If you are younger than 21, you must have the ID card to drive a boat unless an exempt person is on board and responsible for the craft. Anyone legally authorized operate marine vessels is exempt.

A Note on Minimum Ages

There is no minimum age to take a boater safety course. But those younger than 14 years old are not allowed to operate such vehicles even if they have an ID card.

Learning about boater safety online is usually free of charge, and safety information is available from the Florida Wildlife Commission and the Florida DMV. Once you pass the paid exam, your license will be mailed to you.
