Dramamine Dosage for Dogs

Veterinarians often prescribe an antihistamine called dimenhydrinate, or Dramamine, to reduce motion sickness in dogs. Although the Food and Drug Administration has not approved its use in animals, Dramamine can generally be used safely under the guidance of a veterinarian, according to Dr. Dawn Ruben.

  1. Amount

    • Typical dosages for dogs run from 2 to 4 mg per lb. of body weight. Dramamine is taken orally in tablet or liquid form.

    Time Frame

    • Dramamine works best when given 30 to 60 minutes before a car ride. Dosages can be taken every eight hours as needed.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects include dry mouth, sedation and difficulty urinating. Appetite loss, diarrhea and vomiting can also occur. Taking Dramamine with food might lessen the severity of side effects.

    Considerations

    • Dramamine can interact with other medications, such as central nervous system depressants. Dramamine should not be given to dogs that are allergic to antihistamines or those with certain medical conditions, such as hyperthyroidism.

    Warning

    • An overdose can lead to seizures, respiratory depression, lethargy, coma or death.
