Helicobacter Pylori Causes & Risk Factors

Helicobacter pylori infection is a digestive disorder that's believed to be present in about half of the human population. Many infected people do not demonstrate any symptoms, but others may experience inflammation, ulcers or stomach cancer.

  1. Bacteria

    • The cause of helicobacter pylori is the resilient spiral-shaped helicobacter pylori bacteria.

    Transmission

    • Helicobactor pylori bacteria are transmitted through contact with saliva, feces or untreated water.

    Infection

    • Once consumed, the bacteria penetrate the stomach's lining or attach themselves to stomach cells and can cause digestive problems.

    Age Risk Factors

    • People usually contract helicobacter pylori as children, and infections are not as common in adults.

    Other Risk Factors

    • Living in crowded, unsanitary conditions increases the risk of helicobacter pylori. Another risk factor is living with someone who already has the infection.
