Side Effects of Inositol

Inositol is a dietary supplement used for anxiety disorders, depression, high cholesterol, psoriasis, promoting hair growth, diabetic neuropathy and hypertension. Dietary supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and therefore, should be used with caution.

  1. Side Effect - Nausea

    • Side effects of Inositol can include nausea because Inositol is similar in chemical composition to nicotinic acid, which is upsetting to the gastrointestinal tract.

    • Side effects of Inositol commonly cause headaches. Headaches associated with Inositol can be managed with over the counter pain medication or via prescription analgesics. Medical evaluation should be implemented before headache treatment begins.

    Side Effect--Allergic Reaction

    • The most ominous side effects associated with Inositol are related to allergic reaction. Adverse reactions can include hives, itching, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and mouth and throat swelling. This constitutes a medical emergency and requires immediate intervention.
