Acne, Stress & Hormones

Hormones and stress are two of the driving factors behind bad acne. It may be surprising how closely related the two are.

  1. Hormones

    • Stress does a number of things to the human body, including changing hormones in the body. This change can cause acne.

    Lesions

    • Ironically, acne lesions are often the factor behind stress. Bad acne can cause emotional stress.

    Worsening

    • Stress can worsen acne. It stimulates adrenal glands so they produce more hormones. It also slows the body's healing process.

    Function

    • Stress causes the adrenal glands to enlarge, which makes them produce more oil. Oil clogs pores and causes acne.

    Acceleration

    • Stress about acne can cause a person to overcompensate by washing the skin too much, which is harmful and dries it out. Stress may also cause a person to pick at the skin, which can result in pitting and scarring.
