Define Endocrinologist

The endocrine system includes the adrenals, pancreas, ovaries, testes, pituitary gland and thyroid gland, which all produce different hormones. An endocrinologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the endocrine system.

  1. Diseases

    • An endocrinologist treats endocrinosis, or endocrinopathy (also called "hormone imbalance") related to diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disease, bone disease, infertility and obesity.

    Work

    • Since most endocrine system diseases are chronic, endocrinologists have to develop long-term treatment plans for their patients. Endocrinologists also engage in medical research and teach medical students.

    Types

    • Some endocrinologists specialize in a specific organ or age group. Specializations include pediatric endocrinology, neuroendocrinology and reproductive endocrinology.

    Training

    • Endocrinologists need a four-year college degree, followed by a medical degree, and three years of residency. A specialization requires an additional three-year fellowship. The American Board of Internal Medicine offers certification to endocrinologists specializing in adult care.

    Salary

    • According to PayScale.com, in October 2009, the median yearly salary of an endocrinologist (with less than one year of experience) was between $98,000 and $187,000.
