What Is an EKG Tech?

An EKG tech is shorthand for electrocardiogram or cardiographic technician. An EKG technician is a health care professional who records and measures heart activity.

  1. Role

    • EKG technicians work under doctors, specifically cardiologists. Usually, EKG technicians print out their findings and hand over their reports to doctors for analysis.

    Duties

    • The EKG technician's primary duty is to trace electrical impulses that the heart of a patient transmits. This is done by placing electrodes on a patient's chest, arms and legs, and then operating an EKG machine to produce a reading. This practice is known as electrocardiography.

    Education

    • Most EKG technicians usually have on-the-job training under the supervision of an experienced mentor, and this usually lasts about three to six months. However, some community colleges offer programs and board certification that usually takes two years to complete.

    Work Environment

    • EKG technicians usually work in hospitals. However, they can also be found in clinics, cardiac rehabilitation centers and doctors' offices.

    Prospects

    • The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment of EKG technicians might increase by 26 percent through the year 2016. This growth is attributed to an aging population.
