Does an Australian Need a Visa If Married to a British Citizen?

Even though Australia is a Commonwealth country, citizens of Australia require a spousal visa in order to join a U.K. citizen living in the United Kingdom. Spousal visas are applied for at the British High Commission in Australia.

  1. Gather Evidence

    • Supporting evidence takes time to gather. At minimum, the couple will need to show that they have a place to live, are genuinely married and that the U.K. citizen can support them without recourse to public assistance.

    Application

    • The application is filled out online and printed (see Resources). At this point, the fee can also be paid by credit card.

    Biometrics

    • The immigrant must attend a local Visa Application Center to have photographs and fingerprints taken. These are used to verify the identity of the immigrant.

    Assemble The Package

    • Make sure the printed application is signed and all relevant supporting documents are attached. Relevant documents might include the marriage certificate, tenancy agreement or proof of property ownership, job offers or a letter detailing continued employment upon arrival in the United Kingdom, three months of payslips and three months of bank statements indicating savings. Include one recent passport photo. These requirements change often so consult the visa office for up-to-date requirements.

    Send The Application

    • Applications can be sent by courier or by post to the British High Commission in Australian Capital Territory.
