Menopause affects every woman differently. There is no way to predict severity of symptoms or exactly if and when they will occur. However, certain foods can play a role in helping to eliminate the discomfort associated with this condition.

    Fruit

  1. Many fruits contain the plant chemical phytoestrogen, which is somewhat similar to estrogen. Eating fruits such as strawberries, grapes, apples, prunes, oranges and raspberries will sometimes trick the body into thinking it is getting the estrogen it craves.
  2. Vegetables

  3. Many vegetables contain the mineral boron, which is known to assist the body in retaining estrogen. Recommended vegetables include sweet potatoes, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, beets, green peppers and carrots.
  4. Soy Products

  5. Eating or drinking at least two servings of soy, on a daily basis, can help curb hot flashes. Drinking flavored soy milk or adding soy beans to soup or chili are two examples of ways to add this healthy product to the diet.
  6. Foods High in Calcium

  7. Calcium-rich items such as low-fat yogurt, cottage cheese, broccoli, cheese, orange juice and soy milk can be quite beneficial to women who are struggling with the discomfort of menopause. Cream-based soups are also an option.
  8. What to Avoid

  9. Things to avoid include extremely spicy dishes, high-sodium foods and recipes that contain high levels of fat. Caffeine and alcohol should be consumed in moderation.
