Veterinary Assistant Job Description

Depending upon the clinic where he works, a veterinary assistant may be asked to work primarily in the front office, back in the clinical area or a mixture of both. Above all, he must be willing to assist the veterinarian with any task required.

Basic Care

A veterinary assistant will likely be called upon to feed, water and care for caged animals.

Cleaning

The veterinary assistant can expect that much of her day will be spent cleaning and disinfecting the cage area and general work area.

Post-operative

Some veterinarians may need their assistant to help out during surgical procedures. After surgery, the veterinary assistant's duties likely involve administering medicine to animals and providing other needed post-operative care.

Laboratory

A vet assistant might be asked to help with lab work like drawing blood, taking x-rays and performing simple tests for the veterinarian.

Front Office

The veterinary assistant needs to have enough knowledge about office procedure to answer customer questions, and handle scheduling to free the veterinarian for her work.
